A cylinder liner is a component designed in cylindrical shape to fit into an engine block. Cylinder liners are critical and most functional parts that complete the interior of the engine. Manufacturers produce liners for cylinders with closed grained pearlitic cast iron, CI nickel, nickel chrome CI, forged alloy steel, and cast steel. They heat treat the inner surface of the liner to get a hard and smooth surface. The basic dimensions of the cylinder liner are determined as per the strength and rigidity.
A cylinder liner should be designed in a way that engineers treat it as either thick cylinder or thin cylinder relying on the bore to thickness ratio. Engineers should check the liners for thermal stress caused by high temperature variations between the inner and outer surfaces of the liner.
Why cylinder liners are required for engine? Can any engine designed without cylinder liner?
It is the cylinder liner that forms the cylindrical space in which the piston reciprocates. Manufacturers can produce liners using a superior material to the cylinder block. They craft cylinder block from a grey cast iron and liner from a cast iron alloyed with vanadium, chromium, and molybdenum.
With regular use, cylinder liner will wear and thus, you will have to replace it someday. The jacket of cylinder lasts the life of the engine. At working temperature, cylinder liner is hotter as compared to jacket. The liner will expand diametrically and lengthwise.
Manufacturers produce two types of cylinder liners –
- Dry cylinder liners
- Wet cylinder liners
Benefits of using dry cylinder liner –
- There is no danger of leakage of water into the crankcase or the combustion chamber.
- Since heavy flange at the top of the liner is absent, it is possible to reduce cylinder centers
- There is better cooling of the upper part of the liner
The limitations of dry cylinder liners-
- Complicated casting
- Lowered heat flow across the composite wall
Dry type liners may be offered in original design while wet liners have to be included within the original design of cylinder. Dry liners don’t need a leak proof joint between the cylinder castings. A cylinder block with dry liners is more robust than a block with wet liners.
