Why Experts Conduct Compression Test and How?

Compression tests help experts in determining the condition of the engine valve, valve seats, and piston rings. They use compression testing machine to conduct this test. A healthy and working engine has compression more than 100 psi per cylinder, with less than 10% variation between the highest and lowest readings. Engineers take help of compression tester, few hand tools and a little time to conduct this test.

Major steps involve in compression testing are-

  1. Removal of fuel pump and fuel-injection fuses. Disconnect the main wire to the spark plugs and coil; remove spark plugs.

  2. Starting the threaded end of the compression gauge inside a spark plug hole manually.
  3. Turning the ignition on. Depressing the throttle and cranking the engine four revolutions.
  4. Marking the pressure reading for every cylinder on the cover of the valve in chalk and later moving to next cylinder.

Some experts pour 1 tsp of engine oil into the plug hole for cylinders having psi below 100 and retest. If the reading jumps, this reveals piston rings are worn, if not, then there may be issue with the valve.

In the industry, compression testing is done to determine how a product or material reacts when it is squashed, compressed, crushed or flattened by measuring fundamental parameters that help in determining the behavior of specimen under a compressive load.

How You Check Compression of Engine’s Cylinder

These tests can be done as part of the design process, in the production environment or in the quality control lab. Experts use compression testing method to-

  • Assess the strength of components, e.g. aeronautical control switches and automotive, bellows, compression rings, keypads, PET containers, PVC pipes, solenoids, etc.

  • Characterise the compressive properties of materials like metal, foam, PET and several other plastics and rubber.

  • Assess the products performance.

Benefits of compression testing-

Compression testing offers data on the safety and integrity of components, materials and products. It helps manufacturing companies to ensure that their finished products are perfect in fitting and match with precision quality standards. This data can be further used in many ways –

  • To determine batch quality
  • To determine consistency in manufacture
  • To reduce material costs
  • To acquire lean manufacturing goals
  • To aid in the design process
  • To ensure compliance with international and industry standards
